How can tonsil stones be treated

Tonsil stones, also called tonsilollith, are due to the accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that can gets stuck in the tonsils. The debris which includes mucous from post nasal drip purifies in the throat and gathers in the tonsil crypts. These crypts are small pockets that appear on the tonsils.  These white bumps in the throat, yellowish-white globs, smelly white things, throat blobs, throat ulcers or whatever it is called, are a major cause of one’s daily bad breath called halitosis.  Once the debris mix with the volatile sulfur compounds which are made by the bacteria that lingers under the surface of the tongue, it causes bad breath and other problems in the taste. These stones smell so bad that those people who have experienced them will never want to have it again.

There are basically two types of tonsil stones treatment, the natural self treatment and the surgical treatment.  Since these tonsil stones are harmless except for the bad breath it provides, most of the self treatment are found to be effective. The effectivity of the treatment depends on the size of the calcified matter in the mouth.

For self treatment, one can gargle with warm water treated with salt or non-alcohol mouth wash.  Maintaining a good oral hygiene can help lessen the bacterial infection in the mouth. One can use oxygenated toothpaste and mouthwash help remove the bacteria and the tongue must be cleaned with a tongue cleaner every after meals.  For the formed tonsil stones, one can try pressing a finger or cotton swab against the bottom of the tonsil and pushing upward to remove the tonsil stones

For long term treatment of tonsil stones, laser resurfacing is the promoted procedure advised by dentists. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic, using a scanned carbon dioxide laser, which vaporizes and removes the surface of the tonsils. The edges of the crypts and crevices that collect the debris are flattened out, so that they can no longer trap material. With this, the stones which are almost like pearls forming from a grain of sand cannot form.

However, each and every body part has their own purpose, so does the tonsils. These tonsils are working on their own to trap the food debris and bacteria that try to flow into the throat as one eat, speak or do nothing. Once these are gone, the body is prone to attack by an illness brought by any bacteria in the mouth.
