Vitamins that prevent periodontal disease
Periodontal disease is a condition that starts with the painful infection where the gum area in the mouth becomes inflamed. This usually causes great discomfort to the person affected that is why a lot of people have been looking for any treatment for periodontitis. Swollen gums are often times caused by the build up of plaque in the mouth. However, some are caused by the deficiency of vitamins and minerals in the body. Eating the right kind of food can help the body combat any diseases that comes its way.
Vitamin C has been known to help the gums for many years. During the 18th century, sailors have been using limes during their long trips at sea to help keep their gums from swelling and bleeding. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that repairs the connective tissue and has the capability to accelerate bone regeneration. It has been found that Vitamin C can help reduce the periodontal pockets that harbor harmful bacteria that cause swollen gums. This vitamin also has anti-inflammatory properties that keeps any gum problems from progressing and alleviates the symptoms for swollen gums. It is recommended to eat foods rich in Vitamin C such as grapefruit, oranges, kiwi fruit, mango, papaya, strawberry, red pepper, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cantaloupe.
Vitamin B complex is another vitamin that helps in the treatment of periodontal disease. It is a made up of 8 vitamins namely thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, folic acid and B-12. All of these vitamins are needed for cell growth and for healthy blood that contributes to a healthy gum tissue. These are commonly found animal products like meat, fish, eggs and dairy products.
Vitamin D also helps in the fight against periodontitis. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the mouth’s susceptibility to swollen gums. One of the important sources is from the exposure to the sun because it triggers the synthesis of Vitamin D in the skin. Research has found that people with higher blood levels of vitamin D are less likely to experience bleeding gums during gingival probing. The recommended sun exposure is about 10 to 15 minutes twice a week for the body to get the appropriate amount. This vitamin can also be obtained through supplements and from fish and fortified dairy products.
Having deficiencies from vitamins have been associated with a lot of gum disease. To treat any periodontal disease, one must correct any deficiencies in the body so that any treatments for the disease will successfully come through.
